Join the Friends of the Dartmouth Libraries on Saturday, April 18, at 2:00 p.m.to
hear educator and public speaker Nancy Franks discuss the life and retirement of America’s favorite
coin, the penny. This year, the U.S. Treasury is retiring the penny, halting production of the one-
cent coin after over 230 years. Ms. Franks will examine the history of the penny – from the mint to
the cash register, including how its appearance has changed over time.
Nancy Franks is a retired elementary teacher who taught for 32 years in Plymouth Public Schools.
She wrote four resource books for educators; Math In A Bag, Flyer Away, Sold On Mathematics,
and Time For A Rhyme. In 1997, she received the Presidential Award For Excellence In
Mathematics Teaching. Ms. Franks also participated in a Fulbright Teacher Exchange in Brazil and
completed fellowships at the George Washington Teachers Institute, the Abraham Lincoln
Presidential Library, and the Henry Knox Museum. Her company, FRANKly Speaking, is her
"retirement job".
Ms. Franks’s presentation will be held at Dartmouth North Branch Library, an accessible facility,
which is located at 211 Cross Street, Dartmouth. For more information, please e-mail
